Useful OET Communication Phrases

Taking History

  • Could you tell me when the symptoms started?

  • How severe is the pain?

  • Have you noticed anything that makes it better or worse?

  • Are you taking any medication for it?

  • Do you have any allergies?

Explaining / Reassuring

  • I understand your concerns
  • It sounds like you might have a mild infection.

  • I understand this must be uncomfortable for you.

  • Let me reassure you that it’s nothing serious.

  • We’ll run some tests to find out more.

  • I’ll prescribe something to help relieve your symptoms.

Giving Advice

  • Try to rest and stay hydrated.

  • Avoid spicy or fatty foods for a few days.

  • Make sure to finish the full course of antibiotics.

  • If your symptoms get worse or don’t improve, come back to see us.

  • You should avoid smoking / alcohol for now.

Giving Recommendations

  • I would like to recommend some lifestyle changes.
